Pregnancy and Shared Care
Supportive care throughout your pregnancy journey
Pregnancy is an exciting and sometimes overwhelming time, and every journey is different. Whether you are planning a pregnancy, newly pregnant, or looking for ongoing care, our GPs provide thoughtful, continuous support tailored to you and your needs. We work in partnership with local maternity hospitals to provide shared antenatal care, helping you feel supported while staying connected to your chosen hospital team.
What to expect from your appointment
Your GP will take a calm, supportive and thorough approach—starting with understanding where you are in your pregnancy journey. We’ll discuss your health, pregnancy plans or early symptoms, and talk through what care options are available. If you are choosing shared care, we’ll coordinate your antenatal visits in partnership with your maternity hospital to ensure continuity of care. Our focus is on clear communication, reassurance, and helping you feel confident at every stage.
Getting the most from your consultation
It can help to bring any early pregnancy information, previous medical history, or questions you may already be thinking about. Your GP may discuss early pregnancy care, referrals, shared care eligibility, routine screening, and what to expect across each stage of pregnancy—so you feel informed and supported moving forward.

FAQs ?
What is shared antenatal care ?
Shared antenatal care means your pregnancy care is coordinated between your GP and your chosen maternity hospital. You attend routine appointments with your GP, while your hospital provides key scans, tests, and delivery care. This approach offers continuity with your GP alongside hospital-based maternity services.
What hospitals are we linked with ?
When should I see my GP if I think I’m pregnant ?
It’s a good idea to book an appointment as soon as you have a positive pregnancy test or if you suspect you may be pregnant. Early visits help confirm the pregnancy, discuss next steps, arrange appropriate tests, and organise referrals if required.
What happens at my first pregnancy appointment ?
Your GP will confirm your pregnancy, review your medical history, and discuss your overall health and wellbeing. We’ll also talk through early pregnancy care, what to expect next, and whether shared care or hospital care is the best option for you.
Will I still see my hospital if I have a GP involved ?
Yes. Shared care is a partnership. You will still attend your maternity hospital for key appointments, scans, and delivery care, while your GP supports you throughout with regular check-ins and ongoing guidance.
