ADHD Management and Continuing prescriptions
We are now providing structured, continuing care for patients with existing ADHD treatment plans
We provide ongoing ADHD management appointments at Kareela Family Practice for eligible patients who are already under the care of a psychiatrist or paediatrician. These consultations are for continuation of existing ADHD medication, in line with NSW Health requirements for authorised prescribers.
Who this service is for
Patients who:
- Are aged 6 years or older
- Have a confirmed ADHD diagnosis
- Are already being treated by a psychiatrist or paediatrician
- Require ongoing prescriptions for their current ADHD medication
This service is not for initial assessment or diagnosis of ADHD. New assessments should be arranged with a psychiatrist, paediatrician or appropriate specialist.
Referral and documentation required from you
Before booking, patients must have:
- A correspondence letter from their psychiatrist or paediatrician
- confirming the diagnosis of ADHD
- outlining the current medication, dosage and treatment plan
- This letter must be up to date and brought with you for our doctors to review at the appointment.
What we can provide
Within this service we can:
- Continue prescribing Dexamfetamine, Lisdexamfetamine or Methylphenidate, as outlined in the psychiatrist’s or paediatrician's letter
- Provide regular reviews of ADHD medication as part of shared care with the psychiatrist or paediatrician
- Ensure prescribing remains in line with NSW Health criteria and regulatory requirements
What we can't provide
This is a continuation prescribing service – dosage changes or new medications cannot be initiated through our practice alone. Any change to medication or dose must be guided by the treating psychiatrist or paediatrician.
Appointment length
ADHD Management appointments must be booked as a 30-minute consultation to allow adequate time for review and prescribing requirements.

Private fee applies for all patients seeking continued ADHD management and prescriptions (not bulk billed). Please see our billing information for our current fees and structure.
FAQs ?
Can I book an ADHD appointment if I have not been diagnosed yet ?
No. This service is for continuing management only. Patients must already have a confirmed ADHD diagnosis from a psychiatrist or paediatrition. New assessments need to be arranged with a specialist.
Do I need a referral to access this service ?
Yes. You must bring with you a current correspondence letter from your treating psychiatrist confirming the ADHD diagnosis and outlining the existing medication and dosage.
Can the GP prescribe new ADHD medicatin or change my dose ?
No. As a continuing prescribers, Dr Hillier, Dr Pala and Dr Bastawrous can only provide prescriptions as directed by your psychiatrist or paediatrician. Any changes to medication or dosage must be managed by them.
What medications can the GP continue prescribing ?
Our GPs can continue prescribing the following medications:
- Dexamfetamine
- Lisdexamfetamine
- Methylphenidate
These must match what is outlined in your psychiatrist's or paediatrician's treatment plan.
Which GPs at our practice can issue the continuing prescriptions ?
The following GPs are authorised to prescribe the continuing medications:

- Dr Marc Bastawrous
Appointments must be made with these GPs only.
How long is the appointment ?
ADHD Management consultations are booked as 30 minute appointments. This allowed enough time for review and safe prescribing.
What is the fee for this appointment ?

What age group can access this service ?
This service is available for all patients aged 6 years old and over, with an existing psychiatrist or paediatrition confirmed diagnosis.
